What are your signature strengths? A tabulation of the VIA virtues and strengths

In an earlier article, What is Positive Psychology? (Part 2), I mentioned the Values in Action (VIA) Classification of Strengths Manual. This VIA was formulated after three years of extensive research into various sources such as religion and philosophy. As a tool, the VIA is indeed commendable for labelling our strengths, however, as it is relatively infant in usage, discretion should be exercised. I found the VIA Institute on Character’s exercises on using our strengths in innovative ways thought-provoking, and is definitely worth trying out!

Here is a tabulation of strengths classified under each virtue, Wisdom and Knowledge, Courage, Humanity and Love, Justice, Temperance, and Transcendence (Seligman, 2002).

Words of wisdom: Smiles and hearts

A smile is a heart-to-heart communication: it emanates from your heart, radiates on your face, and lights up the hearts of others – Yip Pei Shan

This proverb was inspired by Aishah, the ticketing lady at the Bishan MRT Station, Singapore, who flashed one of the most gorgeous smiles I have seen in my life!  It was definitely the best shanshiney smile of my day, warming my heart and feeling a tickly tingly feeling all the way to my toes!

I salute you, beautiful shanshiney smiley lady!

Second, when, who and where did Positive Psychology come about? Third, why Positive Psychology? This brings us to the perhaps, most interesting question in this enlightening series, how can Positive Psychology be applied?

It is only now that I realise that how is imbued with other subtle “W”ives (Yip, 2008). Who can Positive Psychology be applied? When can Positive Psychology be used? Where can Positive Psychology be utilised? These “W”ives are indeed fantastic tools to explain the “H”usband in a clearer manner!
